too bad you've got just one; they're shoalers in a way.

he should be very hardy, but watch his appetite; that smiling mouth can hide a lot of small fish!

They shoal when young but not when adults. I kept a single young individual in a community tank once, and while it was rather shy (preferring to hide amongst vegetation), it wasn't overtly so and would come out for its fair share during feeding time.

So, if I wanted to set up an enviroment typical for this species what kind of tank do you think I should go for. Still water, Slow flowing river, planted or unplanted, etc. What kind of tank mates do you think. I presume that anabantoids come from a different region and Glass cats also. Any Suggestions?

You'd have to set up a slow flowing tank with moderate vegetation and plenty of driftwood. For fish that are found in the region as tankmates, you can always add some <i>Colisa</i>, Indian cyprinids (<i>Puntius conchonius</i>, <i>Rasbora daniconius</i>), and loaches like <i>Botia lohachata</i>. If you want to add other catfish, some <i>Mystus vittatus</i> would be suitable (just make sure you don't get those that are big enough to eat the <i>Ompok</i> now).

thanks HH.
That pretty much sums up the setup he's in right now so I wont have to change anything. he has the tank all to himself at the moment, but i'm in no rush to get any other fish for a while, Ill look into whats available. Finding mystus would be a bit of a problem I think. ive never seen any for some time. I was thinking of something fairly peacefull thats not going to compeat with the ompok for food.
