I agree

and made THIS POST about the same fish in the taxonomical section, it's best to let someone with access to scientific records take a shot at them.

Yes, but things that are WRONG in the Cat-eLog should be in the "bugs forum", as whilst Jools will read the Taxonomy section when something crops up there, he's more certain to FIX things that are listed here.

But I'll leave your post where it is, and perhaps we can have a discussion there to find the correct identity of those pictures.

Neither I suspect is this S lucipinnis:
Image
Four years after the Catelog picture was taken, it has grown into a largish fish that much resembles a "Burundi petricola", even though it is a Zambian fish.

S. lucipinnis???

Hi Dinyar and all.

Dinyar - Thanks for the follow up and the information regarding the fish in the picture that is in your last post. When the first item came up on the site suggesting that the "dwarf petricola" might be S. lucipinnis (by Silurus, I believe) I went looking around in the Cat-eLog for some pictures that might match the given (in Wright and Page revision) features for this fish. One that caught my attention was the mention of of "...lightly colored windows..." at the bases of the dark triangles on the fins (esp. dorsal and anal). This feature is not mentioned for S. petricola. I chose your picture to illustrate this feature in that it seems to show such a color pattern. At the time, and even now, I have no firm opinion as to exactly what S. lucipinnis might really look like. Ah, we all still have a long way to go with this and the many Synodontis that don't appear to fit easily into any of the speicies of Wright and Page.

Dinyar, your fish fits in what I've seen with my own eyes when sorting out a fresh shipment straight from Zambia.

In 3 boxes we found:
-lots of Synodontis polli/ilebrevis
-lots of Synodontis 'dwarf dhonti' (s irsacae?)
-a few Synodontis 'polli White'
-some Synodontis lucipinnis (aka 'petricola dwarf')
-a few "baby S tanganicae/lacustricolus?"?
-and 1 big adult male 4,5" true petricola! wich looked just like your fish.

in the same shipment was a box multipunctatus wich contained the 'small eyed' version with the small spots wich I thought were 'goldeneyes' but should be viewed as true multipunctatus nowadays.
and lots (the most actually) the big eyed, big spotted multi's wich I thought were true multipunctatus but should be called grandiops now.

this was 1 shipment from Zambia to Verduijn; 6 boxes in all (6th box were granny's). the box with the granny's and the 2 boxes of "multipunctatus" were already in the tanks.
