I purchased some mroe bogwood for my tank last week. Did the usual boil it a few times and soak it overnight. I know soaking for much longer is preffered though but my other wood was ok this way, not much tannon released.

Anyway I noticed this fluffy stuff coming from the cracks and crevices(sp?) of my new wood today! The fish seem fine (2 firemouths, 5 blackwidow tetra, + 2 bristlenose)

Did a 20% water change today and only notice the fluffy stuff tonight, maybe related ?

I've attatched pics, any help would be appreciated.

Its fungus...You dont have to worry at all about that,it wont hurt any fish and will go away in the following days...

Looks like the vine root wood often sold for herp setups.

This stuff is very bad for getting fungus, as its not really supposed to be used under water.

However, it looks fantastic, and is probably well worth the effort in getting rid of the fungus.

I use it in two of my tanks, and once the fungus is gone, it won't come back.

I pre-soak mine for a month in Pimafix and Melafix solution to suppress the bacteria and fungus. Works a treat, as there was very little re-growth.

If you leave it in the tank it may get a lot worse before it gets better.

A grazing fish such as an will help too.

This is all assuming the wood is the type I think it is. Do you have a shot of the whole piece?

Thanks for the replys guys! I'll clean it up and see how it goes in the next few days, maybe remove it if it gets worse and treat it.

It's actually 3 small pieces stacked upright to create a large semi open cave. The firemouths and both my Ancistrus sp(3) seem to like it.

Sorry for the bad pic, my digital camera is great for everything but taking pictures of the tank! Maybe that's just me tho

Actually I had something very similiar on my mopani wood. The shrimp, plecos and otos took care of it all.

Its mopani...As i said,it will go away by itself soon... But whatever wood and if it was,it would still go away by itself,without harming anyone,it just would be a bit unsightly for longer...

Kostas is right. Its not the vine I am thinking about.

As he says, it will disappear pretty quickly.

Thanks for the help guys, cleaned it off the other day. Some came back but now thats almost all dissappeared now

I've also had similar problems with Mopani. I boil it first and place it in the tank and it still happens. The only time it doesn't happen is when I place it in a tank with a species that cleans it before it collects the fungus, i.e. Ancistrus (3)sp. It collects fungus in a Corydoras spp. tank no matter how many times I boil it.
