L-046 (Zebra Pleco) Breeding Set Up Questions

As many of you know, I am attempting to breed my zebras. Currently, I have 9 in a 30 gallon long with a strong current. Soon, I plan to move them into 3 20 gallon long aquariums, with river currents, and 1 large cannister filter filtering all 3 aquariums. In 2 of the aquariums, I will put 2 fish that I think may want to pair up. In the 3rd aquarium, I will put the remaining 5 fish. My question is, how do other people have their setups done. I really don't think water pH and hardness matter that much for these fish. I am more interested in:
1) Temp - (mine is currently ~83 F)
2) Current - Do the zebras that you have had success with use caves facing towards the current or with the current, or another direction?
3) Caves - What size caves do you use? Also, are they flat or inclined in anyway?
4) Lighting - How long do you leave the lights on, if at all?

Hi!
83°F is good, even a bit lower will do!
THe cave should just fit the size of the male, he should able to squeeze himself inside, the best would be flat but incline will do as well as long as you don't get into the extrems!
Regarding the lightening you should leave it between 8-10 hours a day, a change in the lightening length, making it shorter sometimes trigger the fish to spawn

When is the zebra season? I'm looking to set up a zebra tank around the new year (Dec 03 - Jan 04). When's the best time to look for them (where should I look for them, too)? I'd like to get a few of them (3-5 or so). Thanks.

I read this bit of information awhile ago that said the breeding ratio of L046 is 1 : 5 ie one female to 5 males ! is it true ? , Cheers !

Hi!
You can have 1 male and 1 female and you will still manage to breed them....the number here as not much to do as long as you provide the required parameters!

Mine swims in a 110 l tank, temp 27-29 Celcius, 1600 l/t powerhead on a sponge with airbubbles in the outflow, caves just a bit bigger than the fish, no substrate, the current are not directed directly at the caves. A lot of stones/rocks creating hideouts. Pic's at:

Hi Steen;
I also have some questions if you can answer them,
Did you keep the tank covered? (Dark).
For how long did you have those Zebras?
Did you keep guppies with them? If so. Did you see any relation between Guppies spawns and zebra spawns.

Armand: No the tank are not covered, the light are on for 12 h a day, there are 6 zeb's 4 have been in this setup (or close to) in 5 years and 2 newer ones for app 1 year. The guppies have just resently found their way to this tank, 2 newborn but male and female and they are now doing what guppy are very good at
, by the way they are doing very fine in the rel. strong current, I haven't seen any correlations between guppyspawn and zeb.-egglaying.
