Hello, I have recently buy a Panaque sp.L90. The fish is very peaceful...but I ahev a question for: Can I try to breed him? If I am right, my P***o is male because ha have a lot of dermal-thooth. So, Ihow I can breed him, if I buy a sexual-mature female?
Additionally, can I try to breed also Panaquolus sp.? And Chaetostoma? Thanks!!!

Yes, of course you can breed them.

Are they easy to breed? Probably not. I have not heard of any verified captive breeding of ANY large Panaque species.

First of all, large panaque species can be quite territorial, and you need a suitable cave for both male and female to fit in, as well as the male needs to be "happy" about the cave.

Smaller panaque species are easier to breed, if nothing else because it can be done in a smaller tank. There have been a few reports of breeding of and closely related.

Chaetostoma have been bred in captivity, but it's not particularly common.

Of course you can ..... L90's are easily breedable ... if you have a 50' x 20' race full of wood with massive water flow.

I have a 576 litres (126.7 gal Imp or 152.2 gal US) deep 80 cm., long 120 and large 60 tank, with this equipment: 1300 l/h filter, 2 80 watt HQI lamp, an 275 l/h air compressor (in Italian: "areatore a compressore"), a 1000 l/h moviment pump. Water values: pH 7,2, Kh 3, dGH 8, uMs 175, 25,5 °C (77,9 °F). There is five bogwoods and two river rocks,and some Anubias and Echinodorus. Other inhabitants of the tank are 2 Chaetostoma milesi, 2 Peckoltia sp. L38, 2 Peckoltia vittata, 2 Hypancistrus sp. L340, 3 Farlowella Sp. (plactorynchus?), 3 Otocinclus vittatus, 1 Acanthopsis and 10 little Boraras. Do you think thath I can breed a Panaque here?

I think what has been suggested above is that no one really knows exactly how to get these fish to breed in captivity.

Chances are that it will not happen in your particular set up as you have multiple species of plecos in there and I suspect that will eliminate any chance you have at success.

To breed large Panaques in captivity would be a wonderful. However, it will probably not happen by serendipity and a dedicated effort will have to be put in figure out what key triggers are necessary to induce the fish to spawn.

Why? My fishes are all peacefull...and I'm sure that a Panaque can constraint a Peckoltia or a Chaetostoma!

Well, I think Taksan was referring to a few things:
1. You only have one fish - that would be pretty unique if you manage to get ONE fish to breed successfully - at least a Loricariidae fish.
2. Your tank is most likely too small to hold two large panaques.
3. Since there is no "recipe" for breeding large panaque species, no one really knows how it's done, and that in itself means that it's unlikely that you'll just "happen" to spawn yours.

I'm sure Taksan can explain better what he meant, assuming it was seriously meant, and not just missing a smiley.

I don't think that L90 is a very large Panaque-my fish is long only 12 cm., but he is clearly a male!
