I agree with Janne.
It does look identical to my L48, Scobinancistrus Pariolispos.

Kezza, where did you get it from? I'm a regular at Lynchford aquatics, which is in the North Camp end of Farnborough.

 Thanks everybody. Having looked at the pictures and the descriptions I think I am a little closer....

The fish is brown with yellow spots and has slight vertical banding across the body. If you look close at the second picture you can see this.

It could be a L048 - it has the banding and looks right, see this pic:

http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/im ... ge_id=2249

But, the main description mentions the L048 being black with white spots.

Right, I'll go to the shop and ask.....

The shop said it was an L048.

So after some asking about and some thought, we came up with the right answer..... yeah!

Thanks everybody for your help. Not as easy as I thought it would be.

Based on what criteria?

I'm by no means saying you are wrong, but if we assume that L253 and L48 are different fish [which is how DATZ sees it], then there must be something that differentiates the two. Aqualog says that the L253 is "an intermediate form between L14 and L48". Further, AquaLog seems to indicate that there are a huge number of forms ranging in colour from L14 to L48 - which would make it hard to draw the line of where the limit for one goes to the next.

Hi,

L253 can be distinguished from all other Scobinancistrus based on the very long head and a more elongate body, but bodyshape is hard to tell from those pictures here and in the catelog.
The headshape of L253 reminds me more of (i. e. is not identical with!) Leporacanthicus, while other Scobinancistrus have a more Peckoltia-like headshape. Hard to explain, but compare, for example L253 with L48. [Sorry, I´m not smart enough to get the pictures from the catelog into this post]

based on this comparison, I would state that the fish in question is either L48 or S. pariolispos "L133".

Cheers, Sandor

I have three fish resembling this one in the shop right now. I also have 2 L48 and the two certainly don't seem the same. The fish in question has a longer, more flattened nose in profile and came in with a batch of L201, which it quite obviously wasn't. The spots are every bit as gold as this picture shows, if not a bit more. They've been tolerating the 85 degrees of the discus tank they're in really well. I'll try to take some pics this week to add to the thread. In my spare time ;).
