hi everyone i just wanted to introduce myself,
my name is dave, im 29 years old and have been keeping fish for about 5 or 6 years, probably longer.
at the moment i have
8 synodontis petricola
2 L264 leporacanthicus joselimai @ 5+ inches
5 astatotilapia latifsciata + 74 fry
10 tropheus kachese

Are your fish Petricola or lucipinnis?

hi, i bought them as petricola about 4 years ago. i will try to post some pics if i can get them to hold still long enough

Welcome to Planet Catfish.
4 years ago, S. lucipinnis was not yet recognized as a species [it got described at the end of 2006 if my memory is right]. Most fish sold as S. petricola are actually S. lucipinnis. True S. petricola do turn up in the hobby, but they are fairly rare.

I would call those
, although I wouldn't be 100% sure. As I implied earlier, there are several "new" species of Synodontis from Lake Tanganyika, so prior to this description being published, the nearest thing to S. lucipinnis was a S. petricola.

I'm pretty certain these are lucipinnis, based on comparing the two species side by side in my own tank (& also availability & price) - ie what was commonly called "dwarf petricola" before it was scientifically described in December 06 as Mats previously pointed out.
A beautiful little fish that would grace most tanks - peaceful, attractively marked, relatively inexpensive, easy to keep, breedable, long lived - what more could anyone want??? (it's a rhetorical question before evryone starts quoting dream fish!
)

hi guys thanks for the replys, looks more than likely that i have lucipinnis, i dont mind either way they are great little characters and i would have them in every tank if i could. these little guys where quite expensive compared with other synos for sale, i bought them at 1 inch and they are now about 3.5 -4 inch. i think i have 2 males and 6 females, they are also very active during the day.once again thanks for taking the time to reply, if any one else has any opinions i would be happy to hear them
