I recently viewed the BBC documentary Amazon Abyss. The latter part of the program featured several divers decending & w/them a large block of offal covered by mesh was displayed on the bottom. Immediately catfish of a long slender nature started to consume this "chum" block & shortly thereafter a feeding frenzy developed to the extreme the divers were being probed by these catfish and had to withdraw to the boat. One diver commented these catfish had 1/3 of their body length as their mouth & jaws. Any idea what this species is & (i must admit i was facinated by this as their behavior matched that of a school of pirannha ) ?

Interestingly enough, "Amazon Abyss" will be shown again this Sunday on Discovery Channel from 10pm to 12. I'll check it out and see if I can help if someone doesn't already identify it for you.

I'm pretty sure the fish are not Zungaro zungaro, it's a small-ish fish (about 20-30 cm long). [Yes, I know that Zungaro have juveniles... ]

Afaik Jau is the native name for Zungaro zungaro

That is my understanding too - but the fish that goes after the "Bait" in the deeps of the Amazon aren't called "Jau" - they go after the "Jau" in some other part of the program.
