Hi Everyone

Ive kept tropical fish all my life and have recently become a catfish geek!I am fortunate in that my girlfriend likes them too! we are keen travellers and are hoping to achieve a lifetime ambition by spending a prolongued time in the Amazon. Whilst there I would love to get out into some remote areas and try to observe the fish in their natural habitat. I recently found out about the collecting holidays that are out there and i would also be interested in maybe bringing a few specimen plecos back.

We are interested mostly in having a challenging expedition and seeing some great habitats. We are experienced travellers and would like to explore some off the beaten track areas. Im not set on collecting and so I was wondering if anyone has heard of any research projects or something like that we could volunteer on?

Have any of you been out collecting? What approach would you recommend?

Although nothing is wrong with visiting the Amazon river, please do remember Brasil is very strikt in this region in enforcing their paws regarding smuggling animals and plants from their.

As a general rule, it is forbidden to have, let alone export, any animal or plant which is not for eating - in case of animals - that is dead

A few Geman hobbyists have been (or still are) in Brasil prisons for this, so the danger is real

I would not try to capture and export anything myself. Its just that ive read about these collecting holidays where someone licenced exports for you or at least thats the impression i got.

That sounds like a very good system: local people making their living, as thay sould, from their environment, but you get what you want, instead of what they assume you want
