It occurred to me the other day that part of the name Corydoras is made up of doras (duh!). So, does this mean that they are related to doras of the family Doradidae?

Hope I'm not being too daft in asking it.

'doras" refers to helmeted or armored which is a fair description of Corydoras and Doradid cats, both certainly are well protected fish.

Larry is right in the post above but to generalise a bit, Corydoras & the doradid family are probably closer related to each other than they are to loricariids, & a lot of other south american families, so you are correct to a point

Not a daft question at all! If you want to take it one step further, look in the Cat-eLog-there is a line called "Etymology." This line helps us understand the meaning of the scientific name of the catfish and can sometimes point you in the correct direction. Other times, it doesn't and you need to look elsewhere.  examples: or (Greek)doras=skin or hide. I've found looking in the "catfish families" section of the Cat-elog may also help in determining relationships.
