Having ridiculous amounts of time on my hands but not being able to drive, cos my arm is in plaster, really is no fun However i tried to do something a bit more constructive yesterday, which was hop on the train to Stratford-upon-Avon & then find a cross country path leading to Clifford Chambers where dwells my nearest branch of Maidenhead Aquatics. (It is one of the newer branches & although it does not specialise in cats like Wheatly it does have some nice bits & pieces in). I managed to find a path which saved me about half a mile or so & allowed me to see some of our native wildlife as a sauntered along in the glorious sunshine: buzzards soaring overhead, a dozen or more different specie of butterfly, a heron paying scant regard to the "private fishery-keep out" sign, a small falcon (but not a kestrel) disappointingly flashed by so quickly that i couldn't tell what it was....anyway, enough rambling! i'd remembered a pen & paper so if there was anything of note i could let anyone interested know about what they had, (i used speak easy as i didn't want it to come across like an advertisement, if i used the wanted/for sale forum, that said if anything listed tickles anyones fancy i did record the prices - pm me - Mods - are there any protocols to follow for this sort of thing?)

A nice, if not mindblowing selection, but well worth a visit if you happen to be in the area.

Sounds great- I don't have access to any of the seriously highly rated Maidenhead branches, but the Dukeries branch near Worksop is my preferred LFS for livestock as they are just SO much better than any of the others in my area in terms of condition of fish- it's the only LFS I know of where the fish grow appreciably if they're not sold; the Satanoperca leucosticta and Distichodus affinis I bought from there were in stock for several months before I had room for them, and thety grew considerably during that time.

Hello Richard, would you mind telling me how big the Parancistrus auratiacus were, and whether they were peeling out to the yellow coloration. Also how much were they (PM me if you don't want to put this in the forum)?

About 8cm - no yellow colour at all, they only had 2 & were £16-00 each - all this assumes that they have the correct identification, but they were certainly a Parancistrus species

You mean Hemisynodontis membranaceus? I had heard that those are hard to get and very expensive. Maidenhead (Wheatley) has a big one but it isn't for sale.

Chrysichthys - yep, a tank of about a dozen, size at 4"+ for the princely sum of £6.99 each

- Your right there, I've seen a few black parancistrus recently, it's very difficult to know whether you've got an aurantiacus or not, I wouldn't be the least bit suprised to learn there were several undescribed plain black parancistrus species. Thanks for the info, Conrad

You're certain that they aren't ?

Not meaning to cast doubt, but if they are indeed H. membranaceus, well, Stratford's not far from here, £6.99 is not a lot, and the bank holiday weekend is coming up....

The only thing to be wary of was that a couple of them had deformed mouths.

If you do go, they are in the sump tank, first on the right.

What are these black parancistrus of which you speak?
Where are they?
Parancistrus are my favorites.
I have many.
I can ID parancistrus now thanks to, I think, Mats and his wonderful link to a key for such.

Grokefish - the 2 i saw were grey/brown-ish like the non gold photos in cat-e-log. Loracidlover will have to post wher he saw the black ones.
