I was told the other was a L14, now I'm not so sure

(Theyre in a fairly big tank dont worry, this was just a off chance shot this morning, taken on my phone of them sharing the same area on the same piece of bogwood)

The stripey fellow I know already is a Flash / L204 pl*c, it's the chap next to him I mean, 'he' was sold to me as a L14 Goldie/sunshine pl*c, but now I'm not so sure - to me he looks a lot more like a Gold spot pl*c (L001), but what do I know

I'd just like to know what I am dealing with so I can cater for his growing, water temp and ph needs

It's hard to say what it is from that picture, but I would agree that it's probably not - to dark with not enough spots.

Yeah that's what I thought, unfortunately it's really not easy to get a good photo of him, but if it helps he's spotty like that all over, no fringing colour on his dorsal / tail or anything at all.
Both pl*cs are still babies, L204 is just 2" long and the other is 3" long, so I'd estimate them only being a few months old each.

Well, 2-3" is probably a bit more than a few months, but I'd agree that neither fish is fully grown.

The spotted one, we would need a photo of the whole fish out in the open, preferably with the dorsal fin up. In addition, a detailed shot of the mouth will certainly help eliminate some potential candidates. There are at least a couple of dozen different "nearly black with white or light spots", so it's not easy to say what it is. I'd hazard a guess that either or (in order of most likely) - but it's a guess, and there are other genus that it can be. I can't see the eyes of the fish - if they are relatively large, I'd say Hypancistrus is a likely candidate.

Could still be a Scooby .... but a L48 not a 14
I can say pretty certainly its not a L14 as I see no white belly

Yes, I'm not ruling out as a genus, only the S. aureatus species - wrong body colour [unless the camera is REALLY bad at giving accurate colours of the fish].

and what about a "simple" Baryancistrus LDA33 ?

on the base of this picture, it's simply impossible to say, no ?

Right. To settle this once an for all: It's a - OK?
I did actually write
but it's a guess, and there are other genus that it can be
Until we have a better picture, any guessing will just lead to lots of more guessing, speculation and debate, without any foundation. That is not actually going to help the original poster distinguish between the many suggestions unless we can arrive at some distinguishing features of that can be used to determine the genus (and from there the species).

Spot sort of does have a whitish underside if this makes a difference or helps at all.

I've just taken another photo of him (not wonderful as he's snoozing under the bogwood, but he was in a good position for the camera so i thought I'd risk it):
Image

from the replies so far he does look very close to the Hypancistrus contradens, he does have very large eyes and lots of big spots as described in those juvenile photos

as mentioned on the OP though, knowing exactly what he is would be hugely beneficial

Right, so we can almost certainly say that it's a Hypancistrus, and although there are a few choices, I think is the correct one.

Thats a young "opal spot plec" Lda82 I think.
Ancistrini species.
I have many of them.

If you mean L082, I don't think so:
1. The eye is larger in proprtion to the head - matching H. contradens but non L082.
2. The shape of the nose is too steep, again matching Hypancistrus, but not L082.

I think you're right mats!

and in addition, it's the 'small spot version' of H. contradens :)

( see my images on the right for the 'big spot version' )
