Anyone know a good site with a comprehensive Freshwater fish species database?

I'm looking for a fish I found in a stream north of Worcester, falsely names as a bull headed loach by the Wildlife Trust helper that came with us. It basically have the same shape as a marine Blenny, but with a slimmer body, apart from the large head.

any ideas?

Cheers,
Ollie

EDIT : After a little rummaging around, I've found they are simply called 'Bullheads'. Still interested in that website though!

GBIF and Fishbase are the ones I know of with reasonably reliable fish lists.

The list of freshwater fish in the UK is found here:

EDIT: From the sound of it you may have found a Bullhead.

It is probably a "bullhead" tho: http://www.arkive.org/species/ARK/fish/ ... _info.html

We sometimes catch (and release) these outside my mother-in-laws' house.

I have kept native "Bullheads" Cottus spp caught in the Columbia River drainage tributaries and kept them in cold water aquaria. They are a great little aquarium fish once they become acclimated to aquarium conditions. i have had them spawn several times, laying large egg masses resembling common Ancistrus sp3. I have even caught marine species from tide pools along Puget Sound, near Seattle and kept them in aquaria outdoors on my apartment deck and those too, spawned.
It is really too bad that chillers are so expensive as are insulated aquaria because cold water native fish collections can be as much fun as any tropical fish.

As a boy I stumbled across a large colony of these in the water of Leith at Stockbridge of all places. It was only many years later I found out what they were. A very cool fish and one which always has interested me.
