If anybody can tell me the scientific name of the Mustard Spot Pleco, I'd be very grateful.

I've seen it listed as Panaque Galaxias but it had a ? beside it as if the author wasn't sure.

I'm curious, as I've had my little guy for 1/2 a year now and love him/her to pieces. I'd like to know more about his type and anything special I can learn about him would be appreciated.

Hi!

Well the problem with such trading name is that they are quite a lot of species that have a black overall colouration and yellow spot.
THe name of Panaque galaxias is not a valid one.
one species that belong to the Panaqolus genus ( Panaque dentex group) is Panaqolus albomaculatus
Another species from a different genus has the species name of Galaxias: Leporacanthicus galaxias
You might want to take a look through the different picture in the Cat-elog section or you can post a picture of your fish so we could make a more accruate ID!

I don't have a digital camera or I'd take pictures of it. I may be able to jerry rig up my camcorder to my vid card and snag a capture of it somehow.

These fishes doesnt belong to the genus Leporacanthicus.

yup that aint an Leporacanticus and must be related to an L232 or blue panaque.. but i think its a panaqolus..

Well, I took the information to the place where I bought my mustard spotted pleco and they said, nope, it's not the orange spotted pleco. It's a relatively newer species on the market, and the supplier gave them the name of Panaque Galaxias. So I guess the name on the website I found is correct.

I have yet to find an L number for it.

I haven't been able to get very clear pictures of it, but if I do, I'll post it!

Well The only time I have seen Panaque galaxias on a stock list it was on the one from Acuario Nanay, and knowing that this Exportator is in Peru...there is a very good chance that it is Panaqolus albomaculatus or at least highly related to this species...

My money is on Panaqolus albomaculatus.

I think it's either Panaqolus albomaculatus or L204a. I don't know if L204a is the same fish as P. albomaculatus, but IMHO they look very much alike.
L204a is sold as "P. orange spot" both in Denmark and Germany.

This seems to be a local color varriant of Panaqolus Albomaculatus ... it seems the ones coming out of Iquitos are "oranger" in coloration than the described "yellowish" colored spots of P. Albomaculatus... Yann is exactly correct Julio has had these in and out of stock for the last couple of years...he labels them as Panaqolus sp. "Galaxy" on his export list.
