Adonis feeding habits

Hi All,
My adonis is looking healthy, approx 7" in length, but my main concern is that whenever he is fed there seems to be a huge amount of waste food. I know that they feed on wood, but is this actually there staple dietetary need, and am I purely just supplimenting this with pellets etc.
