The top one is a hybrid species of , can't tell sex from the photo.

The bottom one looks like a young male .

given the grain of the wood wich points at the size, the proportions of the fish (more adult than juvenile) and the absence of a center row of bristles on the head (the third row, a bit like a mohawk) I'd say it's a female bristlenose.

I agree with Sid on the ancistrus being female for the reasons he suggests.

To sex the hybrid syno we need a clear side view or ventral shot.

I wouldn't say directly that I disagree, however, the fish is either malnurished, recently laid eggs, or not a mature female - it is far to thin around the "hips". But it's quite hard to say - there's certainly nothing saying that it can't be a female, and it's not showing the "row of bristles up the nose" that a mature male would have.

Hi to Cape Town,
The bottom of this page has info about your Bristlenose

I'd be very careful with the syno though, if he's a hybrid, you may want to keep away from breeding him. Wouldn't want to mess up the pure species :)
I have a hybrid syno too - bought him by mistake but I'll be careful not to let him breed.

Near the bottom of the page he linked to there is a section called "husbandry information", that is the information on breeding.

Hi,
If you have 2 of the bristlenoses, they should be very nice to breed, beautiful fish! :)

If you click on the red name here_ it will take you to a page that tells all about your bristlenose catfish. Then at the bottom of that page beside the word "Cool Links", the first four links give you all kinds of good information about the fish and breeding them. The second link is about reproduction or breeding.

Good luck
