Just a topic for suggestions (and reasons why) some cats might be added to those already at the top left of the page.

I know there is a page in the Speak-easy (under the subject of "What are the chances") that has a list of the cartoons, but could you perhaps make a page that lists them (especially if we are having more of them made up) - and perhaps also with a "credit" to the original artist, now that there are more than one artist?

I think some form of Ancistrus should be on the list - they are great fish in many respects, and they are one of the "got me started on the catfish habit" fishes. Should probably be the "common" variety.

I would love to see some sort of Akysidae or something else like Hara jerdoni on the top left!

also i'd like to see a full grown male Ancistrus species, as MatsP already said! I think Siluris glanis is a great species to make a cartoon drawing of, because that species really is an icon!

I'd like to see as many families that are not yet represented, have a specie included.

On a personal note, Hassar orestis, S.contracta, Gogo Atratus, Astroblepus grixalvii, Platystacus, Helogenes marmoratus.....the list goes on & on I think these would make great cartoon-style images & vary the families represented - most of those currently are fairly well-known - i think the less well known species need greater publicity!

Lots of suggestions, but not a lot of reasons why......

Siluris glanis because this is (for me and for many other people i think) the embodiment of the word catfish.

Akysidae species because the striped pattern is very good for a cartoon image!

Male Ancistrus for the reasons MatsP points out.

& you cant find a more worthy case than the truly stunning

Ah yes (he says to the sound of a can of worms opening), I'd rather avoided bigger cats. That goes for too although they are less often found in the trade. My personal view would be that I would limit it to species under 24" SL or thereabouts.

Personally I think a very good point, although the catfish (S. glanis) would be an exception. They are even banned from all trade here - as an endangered species.

Therefore I don't think the big cat problem applyes to S glanis

Then why not putting Neblinichthys pilosus and or Hemipsilichthys spp and Pareiorhaphis... they are uncommon Loricariidae...rarely seen in the hobby and endangered as well...plus poorly known...


An Aspredinidae would be nice too...like Bunocephalus verrucosus....very odd looking Banjo...

that would be for South America...

Would love to see some Asian cat as well like Hara, Pseudolaguvia, Akysis, Nanobagrus...common and not so common but very interesting to observe...

as youngsters (and in some points adults) look splendid and stay in a reasonable size for fish only marine tank .

- unusual, great pattern, transfer well to cartoon format, small size...

I'd like to see for it's a stunning species in all aspects.

I still miss a "spiky catfish" in the tooncollection

something with a lot of whiskers pointing straight forward

Heteropneustes fossilis, or some Clarias or Anaspidoglanis or something; Plotosus lineatus would do very well with it's contrasting juvenile pattern.

a real "whiskery fish" .......

Megalodoras would also make a great toon, since it's spiny, whiskery, sarrated, beautifully colored and armorplated.
all things one can wish in a catfish.

IMO Doradids approach my vision of "The Perfect Catfish" pretty close.....if I was into tattoos I'd have a lifesized Megalodoras on my back or something.

There have been some good suggestions.
As for Gogo, I would like to see , I like their little rodent like face and coloration.

But what I would really like to see is one of the true inverting catfish ...., or since there are a few syno's already .

I realize trying to avoid big cats but the very first catfish to be scientifically described this over Silurus glanis

And I agree with Warton on as a saltwater representative.

Good suggestions Birger. I like the idea of as part of the plan with the cartoon cats is for newbies to identify them but also not to know all of them and so be intrigued and hoodwinked into learning more. If I was really clever I'd link each one to the species profile. Now that WOULD take some work! Anyway, I was thinking that the moustache catfish would be another good one from that family as it is a bit different and is one of the real personalities, in terms of looks as well as behaviour, of the catfish world.

Again it comes down to really high quality images of these fish.

I think we HAVE to have an ictaluriid somewhere - nebulosus was the first cat i owned & got me started down the slippery slope to spending all my time, cash etc on catfish

As an aside to satiate those looking for a log whiskered spiky cat - what about Syno Alberti - yes i know it is a syno but so untypical, food for thought so to speak...

I have done something like this before on a few sites, not too difficult to do really at all. Would just have to change the way the images are pulled. Make links and names, and image file of all the cartoons in a table, then randomly pull 3 of them. easy easy. Only downfall to the way you currently have them is that they would change with every single page load instead of every 10 mins or so as they do now.

I doubt it's that much work - however, if we combine THIS idea with my idea I suggested earlier of having a page listing all the cartoon-catfish (Cart-eLog ;) ), then what you could do is have a translucent clickable area on top of the cartoon area, so if you click there, you get to the "Cart-eLog" page.

Indeed. However, think of the bandwidth usage. The average site visit is 7.8 minutes (which is very high BTW), in that time most users won't see more than one change and so the browsers cache does all the work. There is also zero database load. If the images changes with every page view then that's database load (unless I am more creative) and significantly more bandwidth usage and it slows page load times for everyone. Big enough for me not to change - however adding the link would take some work but it's not that hard - I've just not the time for that kind of cosmetic work - maybe will look at it this weekend.

So, perhaps change the alternating the three fishes every minute - that would only increase the load by a factor of 5, and it will still be fairly well cached at high load times.
