As discussed elsewhere (if you search for "Cave size" you'll find LOTS of posts) I find it best to have a range of caves in various sizes. The rough guide for breeding caves is that the male should fit in there with just a little space to spare. It must also be big enough for the female to visit. About one quarter of the fish's width wider than the fish itself - so if you have a fish that is, say 1" (25mm) wide, the cave should be about 1 1/4" (32mm) wide.
There isn't a STRICT rule, however, so give the fish a few choices ranging from "tight" to "roomy" - so for example, if you have a 1" (25mm) wide fish, start with the size 1" (25mm), then 1 1/4" (32mm), and one that is 1 1/2" (40mm) wide.
The depth should be a bit longer than the fish.
Note also, as the fish grows, it will want to move to a bigger cave.
