I have had this beautiful catfish for the last year and I was told it was a Clown Catfish, it was said to be a L number however, I am clueless. It has spiny / hairy top part of its tail

Did you have to chase it from it's cave to get the shot?
If so, it's stripe placement says
(L205) to me, only it looks to be showing a strong stress pattern that's obscuring most of the head spotting.
Of course another pic would confirm it!

I'd also go for a very unhappy L205. The "rear" looks very much like mine.
BTW, why is is so hard to get females for those?

Getting female L205s is quite easy I would say. Last time I had them I bought 4 females and 2 males. The majority of the fish in the store were females. Maybe because they were cought while the males were in their caves.

Yes, L202 or L205 - they are pretty similar. L205 has spots on the belly, which L202 hasn't.
And both of these have scientific names:
L205 = Peckoltia brevis
L202 = Peckoltia lineola

I would also say Peckoltia lineola (L202). My own Peckoltia brevis (L205) from Rio Momon had small spots on the head.

Well, here it is always males. And I was told that's because they are in their caves while the females swim away. And so far I haven't found anyone who breeds them here. And if people are sell their fish its either males only (and they're selling them because they were unable to get females) or a large group with some females that's sold together.

They obviously send the males to germany, and we get all the females

with this fish having a hairy tail does that denote being a male

It is a definite male due to the very long hairs around the tail. Females have odontodes to, but much-much shorter.
