It would be really really great to get pics of this fish (Synodontis khartoumensis) for the Cat-eLog if possible please, before it moves on to someone else.

Richard,

The syno. ornatippinnis I have is only an inch longer than the picture........fins are all intact....I've had the fish for 1 1/2 years! Very shy.......never any health problems. The decorus is about 6" long.........classic fish with a high whip streaming off the dorsal.......I'm in the hospital, so I don't have actual pictures from my tank ,but Lee Finley will vouch for my honesty! I've been collecting cats for about 20 years now and have been involved in societies, ACA and Northeast Council of Aquarium Societies for a number of years. I even had my own business of selling only catfish, for 5 years! I'm very good at identifying rare cats, plecos, etc.......

Let me know what you're interested in.........Michele sick1 tired1 zzz

The reason people ask for a picture of THE fish you have, rather than some picture you found on the internet or in a book is that there are fish that look ALMOST the same, but are hybrids - fakes essentially (or mutt's, if we are talking dog-breeding, although hybrids is a bit worse - it's a bit like someone saying "I've got a tiger for sale", but actually, it's a mix of tiger and lion).

No one is saying your fish ISN'T genuine, but you can surely understand that seeing a picture BEFORE buying can help sort out trouble before it is one.

Mats,

Believe me, I understand completely! I 've never had any hybrids in my tanks! Got all of my always from direct exporters, wholesalers, etc.......not shops!

Where do you think the shops get their fish from? Hybrids of Synodontis species are not produced by hobby-breeders, as a rule, since it involves injecting the fish with hormones, amongst other things. They are produced by professional breeders, primarily [to the best of my understanding] in the Czech republic. We KNOW that these fish are available in the US, so it's likely that they are comming in through importers, that are in turn selling to wholesalers.

However, there is one importer of fish in NYC that I know has imported wild S. ornatipinnis in the past few years. That said, I've also seen F1s available in a few places and I can't tell the difference. As a number of people have said, it's about seeing the individual for sale and working out what its worth to you.
