Nitrate Filter

I have an old Sacem Marathon 2000 external filter and I was wondering if I could use this as a nitrate filter. I was thinking of using the standard tubing as the outflow from my (850 litre) tank, passing the water through the filter with some foam and lots of biological media, then stepping down the return tubing to something similar to air line tubing, and attaching this to a venturi of a Fluval 4+ internal, so the water is drawn through the filter via syphoning, and then back into the tank through the venturi. Do you think this would work? I have read that it takes literally months to mature it, and the flow rate should be something like 2 litres per day/a drip per second. I have also been told that you should "feed" the anaerobic bacteria using diluted vodka, but how would I get it into the filter media? Any advice would be great.
