Could very well be...everything seems as kharthoumensis should be, except the size, after 15 years it looks to be slightly more than half the size it could be.
Interested to see other opinions on this.
Was this fish purchased as a juvenile and if so do you remember if it had some kind of pattern.
If this turns out to be correct can you donate your picture (or pictures) for the Cat-eLog???
Sorry to hear you lost this fish.

Hey Birger,
I did purchase this fish as a juvenile from a wholesaler back in the late 80"s! I remember it had more of shiny golden hue over the middle of the body. The spots were larger, but the fish was very thin .......I just thought it was different especially that lobed tail! I like anything that seems different! It grew very slowly and became very territorial, living in a PVC tube most of the time. I have a bad habit of overcrowding my tanks, so perhaps the competition for food kept it from achieving more length. The fish grew a little more with the addition of Omega One green wafers. The fish only came out of the tube late at night, in total darkness! Then I could hear the 'foghorn sounds.........let me know what the others think about this fish!

Hmm, I'm not very convinced it's S. khartoumensis.

Please expand...or is Aquarama still going on?
I have also been looking at S.rebeli

A problem right now with the obesus/rebeli complex is there are a number of morphological variations which may occur and are difficult to distinguish.
If I remember right
look closely at the tail........shorter, thicker body also.
is actually characteristic of obesus but I do not think this is it.
I am just kinda thinkin out loud...these can be hard to distinguish without knowing where the fish originated from.

I'm thinking not Khartoumensis, but undoubetedly a genuine , good-looking sp. I'll post further if i come up with any reasonable suggestions as to ID we can debate.
Anyone else? I thought Steve (the Dark One) mighta chipped in?

Hi, Richard B.
Well, Any ideas as to which "group" of synodontis it belongs to? When I bought this fish , it was in a tank marked "Nile Catfish" at a wholesaler's warehouse........
Let me know what you come up with!
Michele..........grieving....

Coming from the Nile should narrow it down considerably. having said that there are a number of sp i'm not too familiar with as aquarium imports.....still need to do some research

It would be nice to have a picture and then add kharthoumensis to that list as well...other than this one most of the nile syno's are documented fairly well.
Just out of interest does anyone have this book, it may have a photo of S.kharthoumensis.
Baensch, H.A. and R. Riehl 1991 Aquarien atlas. Bd. 3. Melle: Mergus, Verlag für Natur- und Heimtierkunde, Germany. 1104 p.
or does anyone know of a publication with a photo?

Looking in Poll he shows a fish with feathered mental barbels but otherwise it looks very similar.
