My lily is about to bloom!

Sorry for the fuzzy picture but the bud is visible in the centre in front of the plastic lid I'm holding to make it show up. I hope it makes it to the top and opens!
If it does, I'll post another pic. It's called a Red Tiger Lotus but is probably in the lily family, not the lotus family.

it's the same thing.....in this case lily doesn't mean Liliaceae, but waterlily.
and the Lotus IS a waterlily from the Nymphaeceae better known as Lotus or Waterlily.
the Liliaceae contains species like the Asparagus, Amaryllis, Crinum, Tulip and so on. no waterlilies
the Tigerloltus is Nymphea lotus, there's a green form and a red form; yours is the green form. both are African in origine.

lotus bloom at night, and most often 1 or 2 nights at all
blooming costs an awful lot of energy, and expect your plant to lose most of its beauty because of the blooming
When I was a student, I had a 'thai lotus' blooming, which also blooms at night. I inteded to make a picture of the flower in open conditions, but I fell asleep at 4 at night
A few weeks later (the plant was really big, with over 40 floating leaves) another bud was at the surface, and after a heavy night with a lot of beer, I came home around 4 o'clock - with the flower opened
Although i wasn't exactly sober, I did manage to make a nice picture - but this was before the digital camera was even invented, in 1988

Sorry, Sidguppy, I should have been more specific
I meant it's not in the traditional lotus family which is Nelumbonaceae, genus Nelumbo but botanists have gone back and forth over the ages. The one BasPels is referring to as Thai Lotus may be the same, it's the one that gets an umbel style seed head that you see used in floral arrangements. I wish I had one of those! Nice. Maybe in my new tank....

The leaves in the picture are from the two babies on either side so as the main plant fades, I hope they will will in the gap. The leaves for the main plant are all on the surface. I've also got an all green one further down in the tank that has two different colours of green on the leaves. It's just starting to send out it's surface leaves.

Good thing I'm a night person! I'll get the beer and the camera ready

Got the guitars but good luck with the motorbike bit. They've just changed out licensing system so that after the written course and the first and second physical safety course, you're up to almost $1500!!! Can you say money grab? Gas prices go up, so do bike licenses, hmm, funny that.
Looks like a Vespa for a while for me...

Still waiting. Champagne and chocolate are too. Just above the surface, had to move the light.
Tonight? A watched kettle never boils..

Sorry the last pic was so gigantic!
but...
Starting lily too tall for this tank but who cares, it's puurrrtty!

4 hours later
Here's what it looks like with a halogen aquarium light only.
Couple more hours to get the fully open flower. Smells EXACTLY like my Hoya carnosa too bad we don't have scratch and sniff, it's heavenly!
