Tatia intermedia egg mass.



I just noticed this today. The fish are about 7 months old and there are three of them. I provided clay pipes and bogwood but they have deposited the mass amongst the plants. The fry are wriggling already.

I've moved some into a hatching tank.

Glad to see another person having success with this species. While it is one of the more common species in the hobby (I am in the U.S.), it is always neat to see the egg mass. Currently I am also keeping and . Hopefully I am able to pick up a few more species of Auchenipteridae and have a chance for them to spawn for me.

Agreed - the wrigglers are identical to the Tatia sp(2) eggs when they have spawned for me in the past. They seem to have stopped spawning, but I do only have a pair left...
email them to webmaster 'at' planetcatfish 'dot' com, and include your name, and image subject. If you have the originals images, Jools normally prefers these rather than resized copies, then he can resize to suit.

and

Liosomadoras oncinus

Jeremy, do you keep them all in the same tank? The only species I have mixed are my auch. coincoides and cent. perugiae (and the lio. oncinus fry are also in with them.) I wouldn't dare put either of those two in with my colony of Jag's though.

BTW, congrats on the t. intermedia. I was debating picking up a group of 8. Are they active all day long or are they the typical auch. and hide unless food is present (well most typical auch's... all of mine are out under the yellow lighting and heavy plants.)

Still working on it Martin, I caught the fry while moving the adults to the outside pond (hoping the rainwater will cue them more often). They are in a project tank at my parents house (which I have not been to in months now ) and it is a 240 gallon. Next time I am there I plan on bringing the fry with me to my apartment.

10 days until fry are properly free swimming. Don't look much do they?

The jaguars are kept in a separate tank with other larger species. The Tatia and Centromochlus are in seperate aquariums for spawning. Last week I had a female C. perugiae lay around 30 eggs. These later turned out to be infertile. I also had two different female T. intermedia lay eggs last week. These are viable and have since hatched. I attached a photo below, I estimate a few hundred eggs in total.

My Auchenipterichthys coracoideus are constantly scattering egges, which are almost always eaten by others.

Found another egg mass today in exactly the same spot. It wasn't there yesterday. That's about 3 weeks between spawnings.

I am adding the pics today - great stuff!!!

About 3 weeks since free swimming. Actually it's quite hard to determine the hatch date as they appear to stay in the jelly for a while then just sit around absorbing their yolk sack for several days after that. Size is about 15mm TL.

I have just found some some of these 'wrigglers' in my tank of what appear to be Tatia sp. 2. Any tips on raising them successfully? I've moved them to a separate tank, but I think there're less than ten of them. I'd really like to raise one or two to adulthood!

The Tatia fry should be fed newly hatched brine shrimp a couple times a day until they can easily take frozen blood worms and prepared foods. I would feed the fry mostly with the lights out.

Excellent photos of the newly hatched larvae.

As Larry says, newly hatched brine shrimp is best. They also eat ZM100 scattered on the surface. The young fish seem to pefer to eat from the surface or just under it.

Another, larger, egg mass today. Again found with wrigglers already in it. I'm now thinking they are laid like that.

Hi, thanks for the advice. I've 3 left which are past the stage of being called fry now, feeding on young Artemia and crushed flake. It seems to me that the eggs must either be released as the large wrigglers or extremely close to that stage. A more recent spawn in my aquarium disappeared before I had the chance to rescue any, so from seeing the wrigglers I think it was unlikely they had a few days to hatch while not being devoured by hungry tank mates.

I now have several hundred fry of different sizes.
I think I'll have to split them up to stop any more spawning.

It's 3cm TL Jools. I should also clarify something I posted earlier. The egg mass, freshly laid, does not contain wrigglers.

what amazing success you are having breeding these lovely catfish,do you ever sell them on.
i was supposed to pick up 4 from bowhead on the pfk forum but he had to let someone else have them.
i dont actually have room for them now but i do find the lack of choice of catfish in the west of Scotland very frustrating and it's good to know of breeder's of catfish you dont see very often or even at all.

It's probably a bit late for this time, but the Catfish Study Group Auction on Sunday 20th of September would probably be a good way to get some more unusual specimens.

There are quite a few breeders in the UK, both of common and unusual species.
