I am planning on getting some corys. I have a 10 gallon tank with a betta, and I planned to put a bunch of corys in there. I asked the guy at the fish store for a sand that would be good for corys. However, the sand he gave me feels pretty sharp. I set the tank up before I started second guessing the sand, so I really don't want to do this all over again. Maybe I'll just something besides corys? (yes, I am that lazy)

Here is the sand, I would appreciate any advice/opinions:

I do not think you'll be able to get a bunch in a ten gal. You'll need to research cories that stay small and prefer higher temps as your betta likes to be warm.

If the sand felt sharpe to you then it's probably not a good idea. Do you know the brand of sand?

I have always kept otos with my bettas in ten gals. Only after the tank has become established, 6 mos or more past cycle. Otos need a mature tank with algae and stuff to eat already so they do not starve as they learn to eat the prepared and defrosted food and veggies.

I was going to get small ones, like Pygmy Corys or something like that. I believe they stay small and will do well in warm temps. I like the Panda Corys, but I think they prefer temps a little cooler than a Betta.

I don't know what brand of sand I got, I'm not even sure the bags were labeled. I bought it at a small fish store in New York City. I'm kind of pissed, since I specified that I was interested in corys.

I prefer to get corys, but I was thinking about otos too. I believe they would be fine on sharp sand right?

Best thing to do is to stick a good layer of sand in a bucket, add water, and stir the sand vigorously with your hands for 5 minutes. If the sand is too sharp for corys, it will hurt your hands. If it's OK, then it won't. Obviously, if your hands start hurting badly before 5 minutes is over, stop!
