Parauchenoglans vs. Auchenoglanis punctatus.

The Cat-eLog contains both of these, whilst Fishbase sees them as one and the same with the Parauchenoglanis being the valid name.

COF currently gives an error message, so I can't check if that's listing the same or not... Anyone else have a comment?

Sorry, I don't know. Is CoF any better now?

CoF agrees with Fishbase, one species, Parauchenoglanis being the valid name in two publications of 2003 and 2004 (although both of the same author).

Great, only problem now is that both fish look very different to me, so I need to find out which one is (hopefully) a correct ID and what the other one might be.
Anyone with literature want to help out with the investigation?

Auchenoglanis punctatus shows wrong "hover picture"

That's because the synonym of P. punctatus is A. punctatus - which I presume is incorrect, since we also have the other species as a distinct species.
It should be possible for one of us to remove the synonym and solve that problem. [I'm not sure how the lookup works that makes it find the synonym first, I would have done it the other way around - look for a species name first, then try synonyms if that failed...]

The synonym is correct; apparently the species
is incorrect (sources: CoF & FB)
I can only find 2 species of Auchenoglanis (same sources): biscutatus and occidentalis. So our non valid species should go in one of them afaics.
I'd suggest biscutatus, because of the small spots (compared to those of occidentalis).
Any other opinions?

The 3 pictures currently in
IMO are
Auchenoglanis occidentalis
A.biscutatus has a higher looking more rounded adipose fin and shorter nose, Seegers also mentions the maxillary barbels are never black.
In A.occidentalis the adipose fin rises much more slowly giving it a lower look especially at the front, Also has a longer looking nose
Spot size is variable and age also plays a factor.

I merged an older topic on the same subject.

All pictures under A. punctatus now moved to A. occidentalis and the former species removed.
