I posted a comment on Jerry Coyne's blog about this and I have to say I'm somewhat skeptical. We get blackcaps here every winter and have done since we moved into this house 18 years ago. They are in the garden during the coldest of weathers (usually around Christmas/New Year) but never visit the feeders. (Possibly not feeding right things for them)
I've stood at the window and watched them looking for spiders and mites in the cotoneaster bush and eat small berries from the hedge. It's strange to see a small warbler rooting around in the winter frost and snow, we're quite high up here. I doubt the journey from central Europe to Perthshire is less arduous that that to Southern France or Spain.
Another odd thing is that it is almost all males we see.
