M. thoracata page to note jumping ability?

Hi,
Do you think it would be a good idea to make a note on their page about how they jump out of tanks or try to? May save someone from losing a fish.

You can actually do this yourself to an extent by writing in the cat-e-log notes box within the edit option on the species section of your "my cats" - (if this makes sense)

Hi Tana-
are they actually trying to jump out, or just coming up for air so fast they can't stop? My hoplos and Callichthys regularly give the drip trays a fair old thump when they come up for air, even though the trays are 4"+ above the water line, but they've never actively tried to jump out of the tank (that I know of). I suppose it could have the same effect though...

Well, most fish will jump. Can't say I've ever seen a Farlowella do it, but I think the majority of catfish will do. So, its not really something that should be added on a per species basis I'd suggest.

I think Jools point is that that little warning would then have to go onto just about every species in the Cat-eLog...
And I agree, which is why I didn't immediately add something in the Cat-eLog, because I think it's just part of basic fishkeeping - fish can and will jump, so make sure the tank is covered, unless you are 100% sure the fish will not jump out.

I don't think they're trying to jump out but then again I don't think my hatchets or Yo-yo loaches have the carpet in mind either
I knew about the hatchet behavior and I read -too late
- about the yoyos but I've only recently heard about the hoplos. I think we had it mentioned on the grokefish Hoplo breeding challenge too.
The hoplos are so strong that their surface visits can actually bang the top glass so I can only assume that they would be cat food if I didn't have it. My other tanks are open-top so they're not going into one of those.

Me neither but I don't think they can generate the kind of 'across-the room' force that a hoplo can. The otos and corys zip to the surface once in a while but same thing, it's almost like they have brakes. Hoplos? No brakes.
Maybe mine are just weird. Headbangers.
Result: I made a wee note and hope it's not too intrusive on the species page.

Actually, the much abused cat-elog notes feature where you can record your own observations for sharing is the right place for it and indeed exactly what the feature was intended for.
That said, it's so often misused that I have been thinking of removing it for a while. Corys and Otos jump too - I have lost species from both genera to jumping.
