Strange, potentially dangerous problem with my tank

Hi guys,
I have a problem with my new tank set up that I hope you guys can help me with. I posted it in the tank forum. Here's the link:

I'm going to do a water change now and take out the "offending" piece of wood. Please let me know if you've ever encountered this and what you think it is and that I should do.
