Hi,

this fish could be L 45 from French Guyana (orig.). Even there are no regular commercial shipments from there, several aquarists have visited that country and collected fish for the aquarium there. L 45 was one species which was brought to Europe.

Hi!

I a bit concern about the white margin in the caudal fin...

I have seen a similar looking species that is usually sold under the name of common Ancistrus but no idea what the species behind it... they usually grow up to the same size of the other common...

Cheers

A. claro looks much different to me. Please compare the two pictures below, the one on the right is showing my A. claro (female) and the one on the left one of the females of my L 45, at least I got it as tank bred of a French Guyana Ancistrus.

Oh, ****. Looks like I've been breeding hybrids then. :-( Not good. They were sold to me as pairs and I just presumed the brown fish were the females. The 3 brown fish did not develop tentacles but the 2 marbled males did. They bred twice in a mixed set-up and I have raised about 8 fry. These were sold to various places that are unlikely to breed them and I will contact the two people I know who did get them and check.

I still have one pair left - I will have to photograph the female and see what it might be. It is unlikely to be L45 I think?

Here is an old picture of a female taken 2 years ago

Your fish looks just like a female A. claro to me Jools, I have some at work that were imported from Brazil and there is a tankful at BAS, also from wild, where every female looks like yours. Erwin's female may just be a very dominant or old female that has become somewhat masculinized.
