has anyoen tried feeding something interesting to your fish?
like i used to keep silver dollars and i fed them black berries and they loved it!

like i heard someone fed their plecs with yellow bells and egg plant and got some rainbow poop!

so what is new and interesting on the fish menu these days?

I suppose someone somewhere has tried most things, but more unusual things might include plums, peaches, grapes, asparagus, mushrooms, oysters, lobster, crab, flies, woodlice etc. Of course it depends on what fish we're on about...

The funniest one that I wouldn''t try again is feeding your fish a round carrot. Sinks nicely and they love them but I'm afraid a Twig just doesn't weigh enough to stop it from rolling over on him! I couldn't take it and had to take it out and cut it down the middle, poor little guy!

I tried a black cherry but the colour of the poo is too alarming.

For anyone who hasn't done so yet, check out my article about feeding plecos (link to the right of this post), which gives many examples of food that is good for plecos. Most of these foods can be used for other fishes too, as long as the food is in a shape/consistency that matches what the fish can eat/chew.

would mushroom work on bn's?

i've tried getting some black beard algae from a badly affected tank and put it in with some garlic extract, dried overnight and i fed it to my plecs and the seemed to like that

Mushroom for B/N - definately, some love it, some are less keen

would the spores of the mushroom affect them?-well then again i could always wash it thoroughly

and you put in yoghurt in your tanks or are you just teasing me?

I doubt spores are a problem, and yes, you can actually use yogurt to feed fishes. It doesn't mix with water very well, and sinks to the bottom nicely.

I only tried mushroom the once (it's REALLY buoyant!) with bristlenoses- my female grabbed it immediately, then shot off with such disgust because it wasn't what she was expecting. I left it in for 2 days as it didn't seem to be deteriorating, but never saw the adults on it after they'd tried it and gone "ewww", but the fry seemed to like it. I keep meaning to try it again on my various plecs.

I'm sure someone's posted on here that their bristlenose love it, so it's definitely on the "worth trying" list.

It has to be a certain type of yoghurt .....natural bio-yoghurt, prebiotic, probiotic or anything else.

I may have found the key to the mushrooms. I freeze them first and after they thaw out, they sink nicely. The plecos like them, especially the twigs. I guess they don't have too much nutritional value but it seems to be a treat-food.

I also have been using stainless steel skewers for food that is kind of hard to clip or weigh down. Easy to get out too.

should i add the frozen mushroom to the tank and let it sink by itself? or let it thaw out fully outside the tank and thenn alolowing it to sink?
and another way of sinking veges is using stainless steel chopsticks!

I let mine come up to room temp first.
If you can find good quality canned/tinned mushroom, you don't have to bother with the freezing. Worth reading the label for sure though because sometimes I've seen additives in the canned ones.
