Brachyplatystoma platynemum /Goslinea platynema

Hi All.

Any one the proud owner of one of these splendid fish?
They are notoriously difficult to keep by all accounts especially over the 1st few weeks and do not travel at all well.
Very fragile to begin with until they settle.

Anyone with ANY experience of keeping these that they could share would be much appreciated.

I POTENTIALY may be obtaining one but want to research their needs as much as possible before doing so.

Thanks
Rob

I'd love to have one some day and I am listening intently too. Redtailrob's comments are scary though, hopefully not a showstopper (it's a HUGE, HUGE, long-lived fish, up to 3 m - will need a pond when grown, I guess, not a home-sized aquarium).

ok, I got it confused with Pimelodidae Brachyplatystoma Brachyplatystoma filamentosum, but platynemum is not shabby either at 1.2 m tops. I am still very intersted.

Fishes of that size (> 60 cm) starts to need tanks or ponds beyond "normality". Huge basement tank constructions of several meters wide in all directions. Therefore I hope they're not too common because I don't believe too many people have aquariums the size of public ones.

But they are indeed beautiful fishes.

I had a 3" Goslinea about 20 years ago but only for a while as i sold it after a couple of months. It's new owner had it for many years (i lost contact with him when he moved down south )

It seemed unfussy & fed well on small earthworms & blood worm. I suspect it was acclimatised well before i got it.

Sorry not much info really...

There are only 4 registered keepers: (1) arapaima, (2) amiidae, (3) amazonfishman, (4) SuperLaz. Maybe that's why.

And none of those are particularly active members of the forum either.

Clearly!!
Guess I'll just get my water spot on before obtaining and keep it on it's own for the 1st few months! If not longer :)
Will try all the usuals such as worms, River shrimps, fresh Prawns etc

:D :D :D The Eagle has landed !!!!

Picked mine up on Sunday.
Absolute out of this world stunning fish, around 7".

Can't thank Wildwoods & Keith Lambert in particular enough for all their efforts in both getting these magnificent fish and then in the general care & well being of these fish.
They couldn't have been more helpful, held the fish for a number of weeks to make sure they where settled & feeding before being offered for sale and then held one for me whilst we tested & matched our water chemistry's ....pH etc before collection.
Excellent service & a magnificent fish. :D

Well this splendid fish appears to have settled in nicely & is already taking large Earthworms / nightcrawlers. :D
Have been trying it on a number of frozen foodstuffs too but it shows no interest at present.
Not at all worried yet though as my Tigrinus & Jurense took months to wean of live food & they now eat sinking pellets and everything.
In fact the Tig goes Nuts for Mascivore pellets :o

Have taken some reasonable pictures with my phone but will try & get some better ones to post here.
