What does 'af' stand for?

This might sound a silly question, but I'm struggling to work it out.

I'm guessing:

cf = captive farmed
wc = wild caught
cb = captive bred
af = ?

(in the middle of the scientific name, eg Ancistrus cf. cirrhosus)

Please could someone shed some light on this please?

Many thanks,

Harry

Have a look at this: http://www.planetcatfish.com/core/glossary.php
Cf is explained as well; it's not captive farmed however :wink:

wc in general convo stands for "wild caught". I dont think there is a scientific use of wc. And cb means captive bred.

the cf. used in scientific names on the other hand is a latin abbreviation. Abbreviating for confer (literally meaning "bring together") meaning compare.

For example, Pseudacanthicus leopardus (L600) and Pseudacanthicus cf. leopardus (L114). Means that L114 is very similar and comparable to the leopardus, but scientifically unsure if they are in fact the same species.

oops...looks like Marc beat me to it..lol
