A friend of mine just mailed me the August 2003 issue of DATZ and the Loricariid Special Issue. My first time reading DATZ. Very impressive. Now why can't we have a magazine like this in the US -- or anywhere in the English-speaking world -- instead of the puerile crap we have (Cat Chat excepted

)?
I'm struck by the large number of competent "amateur ichthyologists" who contribute to a magazine like DATZ. We have such people in the English-speaking world too, many even contribute to these forums. So why is the English-speaking hobby dominated by hormonally challenged adolescents?

maybe it's got something to do with a large number of them posting on boards like this?

Besides, where are we going to get our jollies if the magazines became more competent?

BTW, this August issue of DATZ has a great article on Tang Synos (Part 1 of 2) by none other than my good friend Erwin Schraml. Among other great photos, there are crystal clear photos of the holotypes of all the three species discussed in the article (S. multipunctatus, S. petricola and S. polli).

PS: And speaking of Synos, I feel compelled to strongly protest your pronunciation of this word, Heok Hee. It's not "Sigh-no", man, it's "Sin-no". What a barbarism!

Po-tay-toe, po-tah-toe.
How would you pronounce
Pinus?

For that, I must refer you to the
Moderator Code of Conduct and Pronunciation. Among other things, it states that discussion of erect pine trees is strictly verboten on this site.

My point being that most people out there will pronounce it pie-ness. Not many Latin purists out there, so I guess we can all be excused for not pronouncing it the Romans do.

Check this out: every single word in the English language that begins with "SY" has a short i pronunciation (as in "sin"). Almost all of these words are derived from Greek and Latin.

That Tangayika Syno article appears too in english magazine Today`s fishkeeper written in english by Erwin Schraml. You should also check Das Aquarium and Aquaristik aktuell, both very good german aquarium magazines. All three have different articles of catfishes in every issue.Very good writers.Ingo Seidel and Hans-Georg Evers(Wels ATlas1 & 2) among others.Next issue of aquaristik aktuell have articles of breeding L 134 and keeping L24.Should be in my postbox today- hope so.

Ok. Anyone fancy posting a .wav file of the correct pronunciation ?

I know. I wanted to show that not ever Latin Greek word in scientific names is pronounced correctly, especially by English speakers.
Another case in point (to use a catfish example), hardly anybody will pronounce
Glanapteryx with a silent p. Since the root word pteryx has a silent p, the correct pronunciation of
Glanapteryx should come with one.

Leave Rusty alone, it's not his fault!

The thing that gets me in all this is how much information produced in local magazines is lost over time. Such great outpourings of knowledge will only become fixed in global terms when they are published in books or regugitated on a regular basis in other ways.
Take Ingo's spawning ancistrinae lecture that has been online here for a few years now. If that hadn't been published here would there be the same global successes with breeding those fish? Maybe there would...
Rightly or wrongly, it will take some time before everyone trusts a good website in the way they trust a good book. Thus it will take some time before the same prestige attached to publishing on paper will be given to web publishers.

True!! very true!
Web-info is easy to get; all you need is a PC or a Mac, a telephone line and google....
Type "catfish" or any otherinteresting fishgroup; and UP go the links to the great sites, like this one.
Guess how I found this one some time ago?
by trying the web for the now sadly gone "British Catfish Association"......
It's MUCH easier than getting a certain issue of Datz or even worse an Asian fishmagazine, or a US-based one.....
And I'm not even talking language here, I can count myself lucky in reading English and German at leisure, a bit of France (enough to understand in general what Tanganyika.netliberte or Pierre Brichard are talking about), none of whom are my native language.[/quote]

taratron, it's not all it's cracked up to be you know... the outbreaks of pimples, the mood swings... boy I'm glad I got out of that stage alive.
And Rusty's a good man, even if he does get too excited over chaca cats ;)
I think part of the reason that internet articles and sites aren't taken as seriously is that any moron can write them, and put them up, regardless of truth. I've seen some articles out there that just made me scratch my noodle and then laugh. Oh, wait, no, that's when Fenner tries to write about plecos in TFH, or at the misinformation and conflicting information in that catfish book by Midori...

You bet your sweet anal fins for that!
If the gods gave the choice between going through that again or the gallow's pole tomorrow;
I'd toss the hangman a quarter, make a jest for the crowd and drop the drop with a grin on my face!
MAN, life definitely improved after 19.....there was ample room for improving, mind
