Yesterday I received an excellent article from PTURLEY!

Unfortunately it's in Japanese characters, but the pictures are amazing; I think it's definitely CotM material, if anything else.

I think many of us would benifit, if any Japanese speaking/reading planetcatfish-member would contact the writer of the article, and perhaps get those pictures -if not the whole thing translated in English with the pix- on the site....

For starters, those pix include:
-baby Phyllo's
-Parents exchanging the babies
-Adult with young in the mouth
-Adult with eggs in the mouth
-A good view of the breeding tank, including the Phyllo's
etc etc

Another question for Pturley: can you name the author and or the name of the fishkeepers'magazin, the article was in?

On the planet regulars collective effort front, how possible would it be to contacting this aquarist and enquire if he would like to get his work translated and published as a cotm?

Would be another excellent scoop, no?

I think it would probably be more worthwhile for a Planetarian to write a CoTM based on the Japanese and German spawning reports, plus personal observation, etc. The best part of the Japanese article is the pix; I actually found the German article more informative.

This is pretty common with Japanese magazines, they are on largely the same level as U.S. ones. Lots of pictures, short on details.

But to do things properly, it would be definitely worthwile getting permission from the authors for using those pix.....awesome material.

And I'm not sure yet, if my Phyllo's will co-operate that neatly on both spawning and posing for the camera while breeding.
They're happily digging, and next week I can lay my hands on a few females; I have a strong impression that my two pairs are actually three males, and one female, hence...

How are yours' doing Dinyar? Still up & running too?


btw, nothing against Pturley's scans, but if I can lay my hands on a copy of that magazine -despite me not reading Japanese- I would sure be happy!
Anybody know where I can order that edition from that particular magazine?

Yeah, mine are fine. Survived the Great Blackout and everything. They may look fragile but they're obviously tough fish. We've actually seen them mount guerilla attacks on much larger Synodontis and snatch pieces of fish, shrimp, etc. right out of their mouths.

One tip in these fish, keep a careful eye on your water quality.

These fish are extremely susceptable to a bacterial bloat if you don't keep up on the water changes.

mine are weird too; when I feed tabs, they actually take them in their mouth without chewing and swim to their burrow to eat at leisure.
