Hi everyone,

I hope someone out there can offer me some advice - I've got a pair of S. eupterus which have developed a nasty case of ich (result of adding two improperly quarantined Hoplosternum spp. I'm afraid). Anyway, as a treatment regime, I'm considering raising the tank temp to 30 deg C and using a half strength dose of Protozin. The tank is 240L, ammonia 0, nitrite 0 - what do you think?

Thanks Rusty, don't know how i missed that thread. Two final questions though, I've also got a Hypancistrus (probably L36a) - would that be OK with the higher temp? And...does Protozin contain the sort of ingredients discussed?

Nobody is too sure what the active ingredient of Protozin is, since Waterlife seems to think it should be a trade secret.
However, people have had success treating ich with it, so it should at least have some, if not all, of the ingredients listed.

Hypancistrus shouldn't mind the high temps at all.

For what its worth apparently Protozin is the gentlest treatment for ICH, and is recommended for use on loaches.
Half dose is pointless because the treatment is over a period of days starting with a low dose so not to distress the fish to much, you will see if there is a problem as you increase dosage .

Well, I think things are starting to improve here (we're on day 3 of the treatment course). Tank temp is 30 deg, full doses of Protozin yesterday and this morning don't seem to be having any adverse effect and I can't see any spots on the Syno's. So that's good.

I do have one minor concern though in that both syno's have small patches on fungus on them where the ich was concentrated. Will the Protozin deal with this as well in time or do I need to be doing anything else? I'm doing regular small (10-15%) water changes and using low doses of salt.

Protozin supposedly works on fungus, so I guess there's no need for further medication.
