RTC - hybrid with what else?

In short a colleague went to a party & half of the basement was converted into a monster tank with a few cats in amongst some others. A few phone pics were taken including one of a supposed RTC x TSN but it looks very different to those in cat-e-log. Not really any chance of additional pics i'm afraid but worthy of opinions of anyone out there.
supposed RTC x TSN but note headshape & barbels.

yep, it's one strange looking humpback cat. i have two significantly differently-looking RTCxTSN hybrids, as conveyed before.

could it be that RTC(male) x TSN(female) is a totally different fish than TSN(m) x RTC(f)?

Normally hybrids have more from the mother than from the father due to the mitochondrial DNA. A mule isn't the same as a hinny although they have the same parents, a donkey and a horse.

I'll admit it looks different from other hybrids I've seen before, but that doesn't mean it's not an RTC x TSN hybrid necessary...

Possible.

While it is true that mitochondrial DNA is maternally inherited, mitochondrial DNA has no effect on how the fish actually looks. A mule isn't the same as a hinny for reasons unrelated to mitochondrial DNA.

How about RTC/TSN Hybird x Jau?

Although saying that aren't Hybrid's infertile ?
Long time since I studied Biology.

Mammal hybrids are generally infertile [but I think some of the lion/tiger crosses are fertile]. It's quite common for fish hybrids to be fertile - Hypancistrus hybrids for example are known to be fertile.

I was thinking when I first saw the pictures that may be part of the mix. I'm a bit doubtful that it's a hybrid with a hybrid parent, but it's not impossible.

On the other hand, those Hypancistrus hybrids breed without human intervention (other than putting them together in the same tank), versus these pimelodid hybrids which are likely produced through hormones or stripping the fish. I'm certain an RTC x TSN hybrid has a higher probability of being infertile than a hybrid between members of the same genus.

Absolutely right - I should have mentioned that...
