Hi, I have 3 x L330. All animals are approx 30 cm. I think it's 1 male and 2 females. As for now they are housed with many other fish in a 1250 liter tank (one of those fish is a 30 cm L27?; I think it's a male).

I have a 300 liter spare tank (Juwel Rio 300: 1.20 m x 0.50 m x 0.60 m). I am thinking of moving these 3 x L330 to this spare tank, put a lot of wood in it and than hope they will start breeding. I read some information on the internet and I know that it is hard to breed Panaque, so I need more information before I start this set-up.

My questions:
- Are they the right species L330/L27? (see pictures below)
- Is the 300 liter tank large enough?
- Does anyone have experience with breeding panaque?
- Where do I find good information (articles..etc)?
- Tips (about breedingsholes?, food?, temperature?, light?, waterquality?...etc.)
- Should I put the L27 also in the breedingtank?

Well, I'n no expert on Panaques but I would say that you need a much bigger aquarium to have any chans to breed these gigants. Are you 100% sure of the sex?

I would aspekt them to perhaps lay eggs on big holes in the boog wood perhaps...

Never heard that anything except the Blue eyed panaque has been bred.

I would gess yhat you're the pioneer!

Would be interesting to se pics from above of these... would perhaps be the best way to tell their sex for sure... looking at thir heads.

I would say that fish 2 is L330, the other two are most likely L190. Only L190 is a species in it's own right, , whereas L330 or is currently considered a regional variant.

In a word, no. You would really struggle to keep them in 120x50x60cm both territorially and water management wise. I keep a 40cm L190 in a 120x60x45cm aquarium and I find this hard enough. Why not keep them in your 1250 litre tank?

There is a member here who reported breeding , here is some forum discussion about it http://www.planetcatfish.com/forum/view ... =5&t=30622, although this and a couple of other reports were not 100% proved.

Your best bet for information is on here, there is very little published information about these fishes.

As for specific breeding requirements, your fish might not be 1 male 2 female, as large females have been known to grow odontodes. You need to examine areas like head, body and anus/vent shape. A very large cave, preferably wooden. Heavy feeding with more animal protein food to get them into prime shape and perhaps simulating a wet/dry season.

I wish you luck with your attempt. I also want to breed these fishes, in the future, and perhaps be the first.

Thanks for the reactions. In the meanwhile I did research on this forum and all information more or less confirmed what I was afraid of; the Juwel Rio 300 tank is to small.

I need the space in my other tank, beacause I want to get rays again, so I decided to sell 3 of them after all . Hopefully I will find an owner that can give them the enviroment they need (hopefully to breed .

Only way to breed Panaques is in a proper race .....
