Can anyone advise a treatment for Septicemia in redtail catfish? He's not eating, so oral antibiotics are not going to work. I've had Whiskers about ten months,He is about 13". Three weeks ago I moved whiskers and his tank-mate to a larger tank (from 45g. to 240g.), and I put them in the new tank to early, that probably shocked his system and caused the bacteria infection. I know that one must be careful when treating scaleless fish. The koi is showing signs, also he is flashing on everything in the tank. Thanks in advance for any help or recomendations.

What process of cycling did you do on your new tank? Have you measured the ammonia and nitrite levels in your tank?

Unfortunately, septicimia/internal bacterial infections are difficult to treat (with success). There are water soluble antibiotics, but it can be harsh on the beneficial bacteria of the filter system, so careful monitoring for ammonia and nitrite would be necessary, and if needed, you should do large water changes to keep these levels safe (should be zero).

I have found Interpet No.9 actually works very well for internal bacterial infections and does not seem to damage the filtration bacteria. It also does not bother my plecs, cories or clown loach.

Not sure if you can get it in the US though.

Metro ...Metro and more Metro .... it will kill your filter but its really the only way.

Taksan, if you mean metronidazole, then it is an anti-parasitic medicine, AFAIK and this is the only way I used it. Perhaps, you know something else?

I'd suggest to try the proven combo:

Nitrofurazone + Furazolidone (approx. 2:1 proportion)

- the brand names may differ but look for these two active ingredients. Nitrofurazone is often sold separately - can try that alone too. If you keep a lot of fish, buying bulk would make sense: I bought 1 kilogram of each medicine from Fishman Chemicals - can vouch for the quality of their products.

Needless to say, pay attention to the dosing.

Itching may be from many things: parasites, bacterial infection, or high ammonia.

You might be well advised to read MissBooBoo's entire thread I cited above.

The fact this fish is housed with a Cold water cyprinid i.e. A Koi doesn't really bode well does it

koi love low 70-ies, I think... anything higher, not so sure... still they raise koi in outside farms all over FL (in shallow cement pools) where it gets oppressive hot in summer, so I think they are ok even at higher temps. Last winter, I've had koi for several months, 1/2 year at home in 78 F tanks, they did real well.

sure it is less than usual combo but could someone explain in detail what might be wrong?

The active ingredients (per 100ml) are listed as:

Bronopol 523mg
Formaldehyde 1000mg
Benzalkonium chloride 250mg

The only warning is not to use it with mormyrids.

Harmless to filters and plants apparently. Bronopol is a widely used anti- gram-negative bactericide.

Agree yes that Koi can & are reared @ higher temperatures & yes can do very well when kept so.

It's probably a personal thing but i just don't agree with the mixing however of a large South American Pim with a cold water Carp.
I think where we can fish should ideally be kept within their specific groups, although saying that I have some mixed Asian / SA Cat mixes.

It's also probably from previous bad experiences, to my mind it brings a vision of a RTC far to big for it's Tank swapping ends with a great big messy Koi in a dirty environment. (not saying for a minute that, that is what's going on here)

I must have been the only one who read 13" RTC & a Koi in a 45Gallon then?
Although I agree it's not our place to judge but to help where we can.

He moved them to 240 gal...

anyway, sure hope I am wrong but perhaps Don lost them... and so was lost the interest in the thread...
