Locations in advanced Cat-eLog search

Who proofs the entries for the list of locations in the drop-down menu in the advanced Cat-eLog search? The list is rife with typographical errors (e.g. Caribbean is always spelt “Caribean”, among other misspellings).

It's not proofed really. Mats handles it and I've not really checked it much. It's a difficult thing to check as many terms are not going to be found in a spellchecker.

That said, I will spell check it as a task and, if you could identify other errors they can get fixed by anyone with catelog admin access.

Here are a few discovered when I made a cursory search until around the letter F:

Ann Chuang ---> Ann Chaung
Atlantic Drainages ---> what are these the Atlantic drainages of?
Bang Pa Kong ---> usually rendered as Bang Pakong
Chao Praya ---> Chao Phraya
Costa Rica Pacitic Rivers ---> Costa Rica Pacific Rivers

What is the difference between “XXX waters” and “XXX rivers”? For instance, we have “Cambodia waters” immediately followed by “Cameroon rivers”. Does the former imply that both lentic and lotic environments are included, while the latter only includes lentic habitats?

There are two entries that state “Enter new body”. Are these supposed to be in the menu?

Also, do Momó and Momo refer to the same water body? As do Itapecuru and Itapicurú?

“Pearl”, “Pearl River” and “Zhu Jiang” (should be rendered as “Zhujiang”) all refer to the same water body: the Pearl River (aka Zhujiang) drainage in southern China. There is another Pearl River in Mississippi-Louisiana, but I presume the entries do not refer to that.

That's really helpful, thanks.

It occurs to me that when I said they're not proofed, that's historically true but not currently true. When one is added (or removed) or is assigned to a fish, I get an email to that effect. This email alerting has really only been live since mid 2010, most if not all of the data was put in before then. On the positive side, this is all "correct it in one place and the whole site is fixed" data.

Do you need me to keep checking? I can do so when I have the time and continue to post corrections in this thread.

That would be very helpful indeed and I am sure Mats would appreciate it too as it improves the quality and usefulness of his hard work. I should also say that the admin functions for these things have at least two known issues that Mats has to suffer until I fix, and for my part I will commit to fixing them if they are affecting this quality exercise.

Thanks,

Jools

HH,

Thanks for pointing out these errors. It's not the first time I've had problems with spelling/typing. I will try to fix the ones identified so far tonight (assuming no particular problems with admin tools)

A useful tool for figuring out what body of water is what is the "body-of-water tree" page.

http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/bofw_tree.php

It shows the hieararchical structure, and there is indeed a "Pearl River" in the US section. And a Momo in Cameroon, and a Momo (with accent) in Peru.

I have Merged the "Pearl" (without river) to Zhujiang (and removed space/capital).

I have also corrected all the minor typos pointed out in the first and second posts.

I need Jools' help to remove the bodies of whater called "Delete Me <number>" (I renamed the "enter name" and "empty ones" and checked that it's no accidentally fish attached to them).

"Delete me" deleted! Nice work.

And we'll have another two "deleteme" in a little bit:
"As do Itapecuru and Itapicurú?"
This is indeed a problem caused by the same river being spelled differently in different literature, in combination with me not checking carefully enough for alternative spellings.

So, I'll be merging and renaming one of them to "Delete me". I also didn't mark "Pearl" as "Delete me".

Those two items are "fixed" now.

Of course a much harder thing to check is that there are no errors in the actual "what fish lives in the river" data...

Looks like this can be moved to resolved?

Yes, although HH mentions posting any more corrections if they're found, I don't mind at all if that's in a new post rather than hanging on to this one.

Resolved!
