Opinions on using Magnesium sulfate(Epsom Salts) to raise GH please.
Its commonly used in marine aquaria but I can not find much writing on freshwater use, will this method of raising GH be ok for my catfish.?

Thanks.

Yes, we use it from time to time. Frequently used by Rift Lake cichlid hobbyists. Also used as a macronutrient in planted tanks. But as with all chemicals in the aquarium, add slowly and use with care.

Magnesium sulfate can be used so can calcium carbonate. I use a mix of the two to help ballance tanks in 1:4 ratio, as this is closer to natural conditions than using all magnesium.

Indeed youâ??re quite right magnum4. I will mix calcium carbonate for a more natural mix.

Iâ??m only aiming for a GH of 5-6 from a GH of 1 so it shouldnâ??t take much Magnesium sulfate /calcium carbonate to achieve this.
Will be adding 20 litres of buffered water every 3 days till balanced, into a 180 litre tank.

Thanks for the advise people.
