Would itbe ok to feed salmontails some chopped up prawns or crab meat? I would like to give them a bit of variety. They currently have sinking pellets, algae waffers and frozen blood worms. Also, what veges would be appropriate?

Hi King_Lockyer.

When using common names, please try to make sure they are those used on this site. You can find this out using the quick find search in the top right.

Otherwise using the scientific name and the clog tags are the best way to help others know what on earth you are talking about...

Interesting. This species isn't in the cat-elog. Perhaps you could get decent photos, and if the ID is correct it could be added?

In answer to your question though, yes I'm sure this catfish would enjoy chopped crab or prawn meat. Try small bits at first, so you don't risk polluting the tank.

I can't imagine them eating a lot of vegetable matter.

Seems like the valid name should be neoarius leptaspis. Photos would be great indeed, as we are always keen on adding new species...

Ok, I'll try to get some photos.

I don't think the prawns were such a good idea. I just chopped up a few small pieces and one salmontail ate a bit, then lay on the floor for about 5mins. He seems to be ok now swimming about again. Not sure if I should give them prawns again.

How big are they? Small fish needs small food...

They would be about six inches long. I chopped the prawn up quite small. He seems fine now thank goodness, but maybe prawns are a no no.

I would've thought prawn/shrimp or similar made up a considerable % of its food in the wild?

As its an (derivative), I've never met one that didn't eat well after going in the huff for a while. What's this guys history? Have you collected or bought him recently?

As the other guys say, this is a really cool fish and we'd love to see/share pics or video.

Nice one,

Jools
