Heterobranchus is easy to separate from any Clarias species when you look at it from the side

Clarias have a single dorsal which is all rays; Heterobranchus has 2 dorsal fins; 1 with rays (the first) and 1 without, the adipose.

this is even visible in babies of less than 1" length.
