Bought them as leopard frogs plecos over a year ago and think they are fully grown as they haven't grown much if any in that time. Around 3.5 to 4 inches without measuring them. Had someone come over and said they were 340s and was wondering if a mistake was made when I got them . Hope not.
Got my confirmation. Thank you to those that helped/////

They are not L340's.

That's good to know. Hoping they were just not very colorful leopard frogs. I have 5 of them and am going to take a pic of each of them in the next couple of days. Pretty sure the 2 larger are males and the other ones look lighter in color.
Got my confirmation. Thank you to those that helped/////

in this case I think the whole common names thing flew right off the handle.....

here we end up with a pleco (catfish) that's named after a frog that's named after a large feline predator and with people not even adding the "-pleco", it'll end up with a common name that's already taken and used widely

if you suffer from what i call "scientific allergy", then the least you can do is add "-plec" which results in "Leopard Frog plec"

THIS is the Leopard Frog:

Call me daft, but I didn't know P. compta was common-named after the leopard frog! I assumed leopard as in the spots and frog because it hops around the substrate (although all they do in reality is hide in caves).

Thanks Sidguppy, learnt something new today! Makes the fish even more endearing.

Cheers,
Mark.

You are completely right! In the english language there are even more common names than in the german. Personally I don´t like it in both. I think it is very irritating and lots of the names just don´t fit.

Just found a nice example: http://www.planetcatfish.com/forum/view ... 53#p228018

"Red Tail Shark"

When I hear red tail shark I think of the classic Labeo bicolor (now known as Epalzeorhynchos bicolor). I was suprised theres a pleco with that name as well.

Yes, red-tailed shark (or red-tailed black shark) refers to E/L. bicolor.

Thank you suckermouth and plecocrazy for your input. Thank you for the lecture sickpuppy. I'm sure you have your students rolling in the aisle with your wit and sense of humour. Thank you also for the quick diagnosis of my "Scientific Allergy" condition. I thought I was just tired after working a couple of 14 hour shifts in a row and posted a picture looking for help. I'll add your diagnosis to my heart disease, triple heart by-pass, diabetes, poor eyesight and loss of hair. It's too bad your pet peeve prevented you from taking the time after your lecture to me to hazard a guess on the I.D. of the photo provided. I ask for help and I get a lecture with a photo of a Rana pipiens on it followed by asinine comments about a red tail shark. I post, with a picture provided on a forum called planetcatfish and you criticize me for not adding the word pleco after leopard frog. I could see where there might be some confusion if I had posted on "planetfrog". I'm Canadian so a little bit of leeway should have been granted. We assume that when our friends are at the door with their sticks, puck and skates that they want to play a game of hockey. We don't act superior and refuse to play with them until they call it "ice hockey". If we did we would be playing with ourselves in a short time. Maybe you have spent too much time playing with yourself which is another condition on its own. I'll stick with my original guess that you might be suffering from a "superiority complex" but that is just a guess and you might want to get a second opinion. My pet peeve is the letter i as opposed to the word I.
" Sickpuppy Quopte"

Very simple to correct by capitalizing. Something a 3rd. grader may overlook but hopefully not a professor.

TEACHER : Sickpuppy, give me a sentence starting with "I".

Sickpuppy : I is...

TEACHER : No, Sickpuppy. Always say, "I am."
Sickpuppy : All right... "I am the ninth letter of the alphabet."

Hi all,
Just a quick one, this fish has been scientifically described, it is Peckoltia compta De Oliveira, Zuanon, Rapp Py-Daniel & Rocha, 2010.

<http://www.fishbase.org/Summary/species ... p?ID=65613>

All around the world, in any language this name is the same, there is no ambiguity etc.

If we can use the scientific names, where they exist, it makes life so much easier for every-one.

If we haven't got a scientific name (the fish is scientifically un-described) we can use the L number system, whatever our reservations about it are, if we don't have either of these "common names" it is.

cheers Darrel

I think your reply is absolutely inappropriate.
