Hi,
any ideas of the ID of this one? Caught in Bolivia, Santa Cruz, near the River Piraí.
Thanks!

Squaliforma emarginata? The smaller ones aren't as long as older fish.

Hypostomus bolivianus Pearson 1924? Small spots on the head - see holotype from CAS website.

H. bolivianus mouth in the photo looks like a Chaetostoma mouth. There was a Hypostomus species with such a mouth in a recent post on FB (but from somewhere else).

There are several species of Hypostomus with wide, Chaetostoma-like mouths.

And the question, of course, is the mouth of the fish pictured here "Chaetostoma-like".

The strong caudal fin looks like a match too. I'm with Steve's suggestion.

Hi,
I don´t believe in Squaliforma, the lower caudal ray doesn´t fit. Even juveniles have a stronger one. And the body shape doesn´t either.
Hypostomus bolivianus would perfectly fit concerning the distribution and bodyshape, but the eyes seem to be smaller, don´t they? On the other side, the holotype measures about 20cm, mine max. 12cm. Unfortunately I don´t have a picture of the mouth.
btw @Mats: There must have something gone wrong with the picture of the Squaliforma cf. emarginata I mailed you. In the cat-e log is a picture of another Squaliforma listed under my name, and mine is missing.

The eyes are sunk in a bit on the type specimen but yes, they are about 15.9% of head length whereas in your photo they are about 24.7% of head length. However, as you say this could be accounted for by size of the specimen.

I think it´s not that wrong, to call it Hypostomus cf. bolivianus. Gonna take some pictures of the mouth next time I´m down there.
Thanks guys,

Jools, if you want you can use the pictures for the cat e-log.
I also still have the originals.

Hi Daniel,
I probably have them somewhere; maybe. However, if you could email them to me, that would help.
Cheers,
Jools

Seeing those pictures makes me wonder if I Id'd my "red devil" pleco correctly. He looks similar to the one above. Now I need to go re-shoot my guy to see if with another 2" in length if an ID can be worthy.
BTW, beautiful fish you have!

shape of the head is pretty similar to the Aphanotorulus ammophilus wich i own myself.. so maybe its an option to look in the Aphanotorulus genus for you?
hope it helped you, compare the heads and the shape to each other, they look pretty similar

I'd suggest this isn't
based on the lower caudal fin lobe not being significantly longer than the upper.

Correct Birger! I photographed it in the shop (tienda = spanish) of my parents, thats why I called it H. sp. "tienda". So I´d never forget where it came from originally. If there are still all the pictures I will stop sending some over to Mats.

Daniel...there are still 45 folders in that file that need to be ID'd and processed to the site, that is just from you alone
(any volunteers

)
