Hello! A couple of quick questions...

Hi there,

I frequently use this site, but never knew there was a forum!

I have a 30"x12"x18" (106L) aquarium, at 22-23'C, externally filtered, and with a powerhead to increase flow.

It has planty of hiding places, sandy substrate, java moss, Elodea densa, and giant amazonian frobit (along with some fake plants to provide permanent shade at one end).

I currently have:

3 bristlenose catfish (2 female and one too young to tell), a pitbull plec (can't seem to find more) and a bulldog plec.

I also have 4 white clouds (and intend to get more to bring the shoal up to 10/12.

I'm looking for more catfish (particularly more midswimmers) that enjoy good flowing, well aerated water at the cooler end of the spectrum? unfortunately the function on the website for this doesn't work...

I've been trawling through and found a few (pygmy cories and porthole cats in particular) but was wondering if you had any other suggestions?

Many thanks!

There aren't that many plecos that are "midwater swimmers"...

Glass catfish may be an option. Or "Debauwi cats"?

Thanks :D

Sorry i probably posted this in the wrong place (brain-fart based on fish I catfish I already have ;p ).

They don't have to be plecs, would glass cats be OK at this lower end tropical temperature?

Yes, I think I'll move this to "Speak easy".

is listed as 21-26'C, so should be OK at the temperature you've got.

("Debauwi catfish") is listed at 23'C minimum, so perhaps not quite so suitable.

Edit: I split off the "find similar temperature doesn't work" posts to a "bugs" thread.

I reckon your temperature is in that 'risky' area for most tropicals. Its fine for the fish you currently have.

Before adding glass cats or perhaps synodontis nigriventris, I suggest you raise the temp to 26-27degC. Providing your aeration is good your plecs and white clouds won't mind. At this temp new additions are more likely to settle in without disease outbreaks. After a couple of weeks, you could slowly reduce the temp. A happy medium might be 25degC?

some of the Asian cats that are free swimming can be kept at the lower spectrum

I wouldn't put Kryptopterus in a tank that cold.
yes, they can handle it, but they're not going to be happy, but stay torpid and shy.
they fare much better if the tank temperature is 24-26'C

the same goes for African Pareutropius, Asian Pseudeutropius and the little Hyalobagrus spp.

however, IF you make sure there's some current and the oxygen supply is adequate there IS a species that fits your bill

it's highly active
it likes a cool or unheated tank
it's pretty
it's available and not that rare

this is a fish that'll do fine with White cloud minnows and small loricariids like Chaetostoma and Ancistrus.

Gagatta... that is a superb suggestion!

I haven't seen these fish for a long long time and they are little beauties. A group of these in a tank with a strong current... b-)

Is anyone currently (ahem!) keeping these??? pics please.
