I've had a Tetra sponge filter -- I think the name was "Brilliant" -- for about 6 years. It's the UU-shaped kind, with 2 sponges, if you know what I mean. I'd like to replace the sponges, which are rather worn, but Tetra seems to have discontinued this product line.

I see something called the Oxygen Plus Biofilter 2, which, judging from a photo in a catalog, looks identical. Has anyone used them and are they any good? Would you know if the sponges will fit on the old Tetra model? What other solutions have others who used/use the old Tetra sponge filters come up with for replacing the sponges?

That Pet Place used to sell the replacements. The key is not to look for "replacement sponges." They sold them as conversion kits to modify their 20 gallon sponge (single) to a 40 gallon sponge (double). I was buying the mod kits and tossing the extra plastic parts just for the sponges. I love these filters! I have some Aquarium Technology filters that the company sent me to evaluate. They are bulky compared to the Tetra filters and the sponges wear out. For some reason loricariids eat the sponges as well (different sponge material). I'll stick with Tetra.

My impression is that Tetra has discontinued the whole product line -- replacement, conversion, new, the works. Hope that's not so, as I like it too. If I'm not mistaken, it was your good reviews that led me to buy it many years ago.
