I have had this guy about a year and was sold him as un 'upsidedown catfish' which i don't believe this to be.

I have had a look through the site and made a guess of a featherfin S. euptera. Can anyone confirm this?

I have had a few incidents lately in an otherwise peaceful community tank and thought the best thing to do was to speak with the experts.

The first problem is there is a night attacker in the tank. My guess is of course the above. It could be my golden Zebra loach but i just don't think so due to the size of the syno. recently i have lost a white cloud mountain minnow overnight and a guppy and platy have been attacked and quite seriously shredded.

The second problem is that after the recent addition of a couple of platies, i have noticed the loach to now be showing signs of white spot.

So i am basically wondering how to treat a tank for white spot that contains the above catfish?

My first instinct was the salt and heat increase treatment over about 10 days to kill the parasite. However i am unsure if the catfish will tolerate the aquarium salt?

Help would be very much appreciated

Welcome to the forum. Your cat looks like a syno Euptera. Check out the following thread as far as how they can be in a community tank.

Yeah i can see peoples problems now. They aren't particularly nasty or aggressive fish, just get quite big for a community tank, and i guess when it does most of its moving around (in the dark) if it comes across something bite sized then i guess its history.

I think i might take steps to re-home the smaller fish and get something more robust.

However i can't do this until i successfully treat the whole tank for white spot. Can anyone advise as to whether the salt treatment will be ok?

Hey guys, i'm afraid i have some more bad news. I lost two more fish this morning. Platy and WCMM. Also the guppy died that was attacked previously.

I am going to treat the setup with salt and get the whitespot outbreak undercontrol before it gets out of hand and i lose anymore.

After this i has been sorted i am going to rethink my stocking and rehome either the Featherfin Syno or the smaller fish (Minnows, Guppies and platys etc).

Does anyone have any ideas for suitable tankmates for the featherfin?

I've kept mine in with rift lake cichlids & west african cichlids. Right now it's in a all mbuna cichlid tank with several other synodontis.
