There is an interesting article about the potential for Hypancistrus species to hybridize in the first issue of the new e-zine Aquarium International, available for free download to your iPad through the app store (search Aquarium International), or go to the website at http://www.aquariuminternational.com.

I find it interesting that the fish will create hybrids even when there are members of their own species in the same tank. Maybe this is a result on non bi-parental brood care? That seems to be the pattern in cichlids. Mouthbrooders hybridize in mixed groups much much more frequently than species that have a strong bi-parental care connection, assuming that the breeding fish can choose a mate of its own species.

Since I don't have an iPad, I can't read the article, but I take it that it's based on the same materia as the L-number days 2009 discussion about hybrids.

I'm not sure the analysis of breeding partners is simply down to brood care - it may be other factors that also affect it.
