For quite a while - I'm speaking about years, not months Hikari was unavailable in Europe too.
If I understand it correctly, due to the mad cow desease, all animalfood needed extra certificates, and Hikari, in Japan, was not able to get them
This resulted in all kinds of other brands filling this gap, which might still be around. I don't think Hikari is currently as big as they used to be, but they are much more expensive
Still, reading in the link about fishes needing time to switch to another brand of food - I wonder. Which fishes are so fussy? And why did the breeder let this happen? Fishes are worth much more if they eat anything, inclouding the food the customer provides

Sorry to hear as my fish seem to have a preference for Hikari products. However, since they have a varied diet they are not stuck on a single manufacturer. For ones fish to starve to death because they didn't get their preferred food just doesn't sound right. I have a hard time believing that to be true.
